Grunhauser is an eyewear designer and DJ, the epitome of Fashion Mixtape. For the past 4 years, Grunhauser has had to divide his residence on the West Coast. He owns and operates Spectacles for Humans eyewear store and his eyewear design studio SFH Optical Atelier in San Francisco. While in Los Angeles, Spectacles for Humans showroom is located Downtown, where the added creativity of styling, designing, producing music and djing is infused .
After a tremendous year in 2011, with the success of styling eyewear to celebrities at the Grammy’s and Emmy’s. Grunhauser released an EP on Base Legere, a label based out of Stuttgart, Germany. Last and most importantly, he released his first 3 styles of sunglasses for his brand Spectacles for Humans.
“Dictator” worn by model
Grunhauser wanted to make sure his sunglasses were precise and perfect for his vision of style of eyewear. His hands on involvement lead him living abroad in the mountains of Northern Italy, surrounded by old towns and vineyards. He worked at a factory where frames are produced where Grunhauser says “Not a bad thing.” The glasses came out perfect just like he wanted. All of the details specifications were made and exact done to his liking. Having to be there and hands on all the way. He could not do anything long distance, he had to watch and also do it himself.
Spectacles for Humans style is outside of the mainstream. No matter what Grunhauser does he stays away from any specific trend. He looks at eyewear as more as a staple, a special piece of ones wardrobe. The frames were designed to last more than one season. Spectacles for Humans designs style are classic with an added futuristic vision for something new. The design process starts with his envision of the shape, sketches it and works from the raw drawing. Having fun watching the idea, to prototype, to the final product on someone’s face.

As far as the DJ side, Grunhauser proclaims his musical “career” is a weird one. He found influence and has always loved, “the mathematical poetry of Kraftwerk’s music.” “The Synthesizers, drum machines, sequencers, arpeggiators.” “Mmmmm! Deliciously retro yet futuristic, ” says, Grunhauser. He rediscovered electronic music in 2009 for himself. Being a vocalist, he knew nothing about the production side, and would end up purchasing a midi controller and software. With a little help from a good friend he kept chipping away at it and 2 years later, German electronic label Base Legere asked to release 4 of his tracks. The songs would end up on the labels techno and chill out compilations; Spot On: Ibiza - Chill Out Guide Vol.2, Tech Boutique Vol.2 and chilled Series - Downtempo Music and Culture, Vol.1.
